Famous for its crazy battle up-river, against all obstacles, to reach its spawning grounds, the Salmon is an icon for endurance and determination. Fly-anglers and nature observers alike will appreciate this commemorative artwork above their mantle piece or in their study. From US$199.00 / GB£100.00 / EU€127.00 Interesting background information: Salmon are generally divided into two genetic camps – Pacific and Atlantic Salmon. Apart from the obvious geographical difference, their key biological difference is that Pacific salmon spawn once before dying whereas Atlantic salmon may spawn several years in a row before dying. Pacific salmon hatch in streams up to 700 miles from the sea and all migrate to sea. There are generally two types of Atlantic salmon: the best-known migrates from its spawning location to the Atlantic Ocean and returns to spawn. Another subspecies never travels to the ocean and is commonly referred to as 'landlocked' salmon. Landlocked salmon occupy lakes and are generally much smaller. Juvenile salmon remain for several years in the inland water where they were hatched. Later, they develop into the stage known as 'smolt', and sea-bound salmon travel down-river whilst land-locked salmon head into an inland lake. After spending several years of their life in the ocean or lake, salmon become sexually mature and they undergo several physical changes and force themselves back to their riverine breeding ground, encountering a series of man-made as well as natural obstacles. The bodies of all salmon are sleek and long, allowing them to travel upriver easily and to swiftly catch prey. They live for between 2 and 7 years and weigh between 2.3 and 54 kg (5 to 120 pounds).
