Interesting background information:
Geckos are found in most places around the world and come in a variety of sizes and colors. Geckos can be as tiny as 16mm (found on Beata island, off the southernmost point of the Dominican Republic) or as large as 62cm. (Delcourt's gecko from New Zealand). Coloring can range from a mute cream or brown to brilliant green or blue with an attractive pattern on their back. Leaf- and frill-tailed geckos camouflage themselves with frills of skin along their sides which helps to obscure the animal's outline and obliterate its shadow. The flying gecko has taken these frills one step further – the frills are so large that the gecko can glide away from a predator.

Like lizards, geckos will lose their tail if they are trying to escape a predator. They have special junctions between their vertebrae that allows the tail to break with minimum blood loss and trauma - the tail will gradually re-grow. When a tail does not break away completely, another tail may bud by its side and geckos with up to three tails have been observed in the wild. Geckos eat a number of insect pests, including mosquitoes and cockroaches.

Most geckos lack movable eyelids and instead use their tongues to clean their eyes. Geckos have very special eyes with notches in the iris slit. In bright light the gecko can close its iris down to two or four pupils, creating overlapping images with a maximum depth of focus. The most common of the 850 or so species of geckos have sticky footpads that allow them to climb walls, ceilings and even glass. Scientists have discovered that this is possible because geckos have millions of tiny hairs (called setae) on each toe - each hair exerts a tiny force and collectively the hairs act as a powerful adhesive. Researchers at Britain's Manchester University believe they can develop 'gecko tape' which could enable people to walk up sheer surfaces sometime in the future.
